Tell me
Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Use the dipstick or sight glass. Check that the level sits between the minimum and maximum marks. If using a dipstick, remove it, wipe it, reinsert it, then remove it again to read the level.
Identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic fluid.
Point out the brake-fluid reservoir and confirm the fluid is between the low and high level marks.
Tell me how you would check that the lights and reflectors are clean and working.
Operate the relevant switches (ignition on if needed), identify the reflectors, and visually check that lights and reflectors are clean and functioning.
Tell me how you would check the condition of the chain on this machine.
Check chain wear, tension and rear-wheel alignment. Confirm the chain is adjusted to the manufacturer specification and properly lubricated.
Tell me how you would check your tyres to ensure that they are correctly inflated, have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
Use the handbook for tyre pressures and check with a reliable gauge. Tread must be at least 1 mm in a continuous band over at least three-quarters of the tyre width around the full circumference. Check for cuts, bulges or damage.
Show me
Show me how you would check that the horn is working on this machine (off road only).
Turn the ignition on if needed and operate the horn control to confirm it sounds correctly.
Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working.
Operate the brake controls and confirm the brake light comes on, using reflections or help from another person if needed.
Show me what checks you would make on the steering movement before using the machine.
Move the handlebars from full left lock to full right lock. They should move freely with no snagging, and no cables should be stretched, trapped or pinched.
Show me how you would check the operation of the front brake on this machine.
Wheel the machine forward and apply the front brake to confirm it works effectively.
Show me how you would check the operation of the brakes on this machine.
Check for excessive lever or pedal travel and confirm there is no unusual free play or spongy feel.
Show me how you would check the operation of the engine cut out switch.
Operate the engine cut-out switch without starting the engine.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use it (if fitted).
Switch it on (ignition and dipped headlights may be required) and confirm the warning light shows. Use rear fog light only when visibility is seriously reduced.
Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam.
Operate the beam switch and confirm main beam using the dashboard warning light.
