LGV/HGV Walk-around Check Guide
Use this before driving. Follow one repeatable order every day so nothing is missed, then report defects correctly.

Recommended Check Order
Complete the inside checks first, then walk around the vehicle in one direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise) for external checks.
1) Inside Vehicle Checks (Cab)
- Windscreen, windows and mirrors are clean, secure, and provide clear visibility.
- Horn works correctly.
- Warning lights operate correctly at ignition-on (including ABS and AdBlue/engine warnings where fitted).
- Power-assisted steering check: warning indicators clear and steering assistance feels normal with no unusual resistance.
- Steering has no excessive free play and feels normal.
- Seat belt is fitted, undamaged, and latches/retracts correctly.
- Air/vacuum pressure builds and gauges are in normal operating range.
- Brakes operate and feel normal (including parking brake holding securely).
- Tachograph unit powers up and appears operational.
- Speed limiter system shows no faults (where required).
2) External Walk-around Checks
- Front/side/rear lights, indicators, reflectors and marker lights are clean and working.
- Registration plates and mandatory markings are present, legible, and clean.
- Bodywork, cab, trailer body, and chassis components are secure with no dangerous damage.
- Mirrors, camera lenses (if fitted), and glass are secure, clean, and undamaged.
- Tyres: condition, tread, inflation appearance, no cuts/bulges/exposed cords.
- Wheels/hubs: secure wheel nuts/indicators, no cracks or oil contamination.
- Mudguards and spray-suppression equipment are secure and effective.
- Electrical wiring and air lines are connected correctly, supported, and not chafing.
- Battery security and battery-box condition are satisfactory.
- No fuel, oil, coolant, hydraulic, or air leaks visible.
- Exhaust system is secure and there is no evidence of excessive emissions.
- Engine-fluid levels are in safe range (oil/coolant/screenwash as applicable).
- Coupling security: fifth wheel/kingpin lock, safety catches, lines, and trailer brake/electrics.
- Landing legs (if trailer) are correctly raised/secured before movement.
- Load security: straps/chains/curtains/doors/headboard and even weight distribution.
- Vehicle/trailer height marker is correct for the current combination.
- Any required emergency kit/PPE required by your operator policy is present and accessible.
3) Defect Reporting and Release to Drive
- Record all defects immediately in your defect book/app with date, time, vehicle ID and detail.
- Report defects to your transport office/workshop using company procedure.
- Do not drive if the defect affects roadworthiness or safety-critical systems.
- After repair, ensure rectification is confirmed and signed off before use.
- Keep defect records available as required for operator compliance checks.
Quick Practical Rule
If you find a defect and you are unsure whether it is safe, treat it as unsafe until a competent person confirms otherwise.
